Periodontics.

Periodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with the care of the gums. Dental disease in this area of the mouth tends to be a major health problem. If we don’t take action against it, the infection can cause damage to the tissues lining the tooth.
It may seem like a minor problem, but failure to take good care of your gums can lead to major health problems. Poor gum care can lead to gingivitis or periodontitis, and can even lead to more serious systemic problems, such as heart disease.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is a periodontal disease that affects the tissues that support the teeth, more specifically the gums. It is a disease that acts by infecting and inflaming such tissues due to the accumulation of bacterial plaque on the teeth. All this accumulated dirt ends up turning into tartar and the bacteria and toxins that form the plaque directly affect the state of the gums.

In general, when a patient shows signs of gingivitis, it will not be painful, but if we do not take sufficient measures to put an end to the infection, the problem can develop into periodontitis.

Periodontitis

Periodontitis occurs when there is persistent inflammation of the gums that extends to the ligaments and bones that support the teeth. This can lead to the teeth becoming loose or even falling out. It is a very common disease that usually occurs from adolescence onwards and is one of the main causes of tooth loss in adults.

The proper diagnosis and treatment of periodontitis will prevent the periodontal disease from progressing.

Periodontal regeneration (mucogingival surgery)

Mucogingival surgery involves a series of techniques applied to correct the quality of the soft tissues around implants and teeth. Its purpose is to treat the deficit of gum, whether in volume or height, around the tooth or implant. In cases in which gum has been lost and a recession has appeared that exposes the root of the tooth, mucogingival surgery will help solve the problem.

When an operation of this type is performed, the patient should be aware that the post-operative period is of vital importance, because the success or otherwise of the operation will depend on this stage. Eating a soft diet, cleaning the treated area with mouthwash and not using a toothbrush until our dentist deems it appropriate will ensure that the operation is a success.
